Retirement Income Planning in Dublin

We help you work out where your monthly income will come from once the paychecks stop. That means comparing what each option costs you today with how long it pays and what it asks of you along the way, so the plan still works in year twenty.

What retirement income planning covers

Building a nest egg is one job. Drawing it down so it covers your bills for decades is another, and that second job is where retirement income planning comes in. The goal is money that shows up on a predictable schedule, keeps coming for as long as you live, and leaves something for a spouse or beneficiary if that matters to you.

As a life insurance agency, we look at the tools in our part of the picture. That includes annuities that pay a set income, the cash value inside whole life or universal life policies, and how existing coverage fits once your kids are grown and the mortgage is smaller. We put each option next to its long-run cost, including fees, surrender periods and the income it gives up, not just the first-year number.

We are not your tax preparer or attorney. When a choice has tax or estate consequences, we say so and suggest you check it with the professional who handles that side for you.

What we look at with you

An income gap estimate

We list the income you expect, such as Social Security and any pension, against the monthly spending you want to keep. The difference is the gap the rest of the plan has to cover.

Annuity options, side by side

Some annuities pay for life, some for a set number of years, and some grow first and pay later. We compare what each pays out against what you hand over and how long your money is tied up.

A review of your existing policies

Many clients already own a whole life or universal life policy with cash value. We read the statement with you and show what borrowing, withdrawing or keeping it does to your coverage over time.

Protection for a surviving spouse

A pension that stops at death can leave a partner short. We look at whether life insurance or a joint income option closes that gap, and what each costs across the years you both expect to need it.

Fees and surrender charges in plain English

Every product we discuss comes with its charges written out. You see what you pay to get in, to stay in and to get out early.

Signs it is time to plan your retirement income

  • Your last working years are in sight

Planning well before your final paycheck leaves room to compare without rushing. Certain income options are priced better when you set them up ahead of time rather than at the last minute.

  • You have savings but no withdrawal plan

A balance on a statement is not a paycheck. If you are not sure how much you can take each year without running short, it is worth sitting down with the numbers.

  • Your old policy no longer matches your life

Coverage bought when the kids were small may be more than you need now, or it may hold cash value you have never looked at.

  • Running dry in your late eighties worries you

People are living longer, and every extra year has to be paid for. Building a plan that keeps paying into your nineties is simply sensible.

  • Only one of you has a pension

If that income ends with one spouse, the other may face a sharp drop. That is a gap worth measuring before retirement starts.

How we work through it together

  1. 1

    A first conversation by phone

We ask about your timeline, your spending and what you already own. There is no product talk yet, just a clear picture of where you stand.

  2. 2

    Gathering your statements

You share recent statements for any policies, annuities or accounts you want included. We read the fine print so you do not have to.

  3. 3

    A written side-by-side comparison

We lay out two or three realistic options with the income each produces, its fees and how it holds up over ten, twenty and thirty years. You can keep it and think it over.

  4. 4

    Your decision, on your schedule

If you move forward, we handle the application and explain each form before you sign. If you would rather wait, that is fine too.

  5. 5

    Check-ins as life changes

A move, a health change or the loss of a spouse can change the math. We are glad to revisit the plan when that happens.

What shapes the cost of your plan

Our conversation and comparison cost you nothing to have. The products themselves carry their own costs, and those vary a great deal. Here is what moves them, so the trade-offs make sense before you commit.

Your age when income starts
Starting income later usually means larger payments. Starting sooner gives you money now but less of it each month.
Lifetime or fixed-period payments
Income guaranteed for life costs more than income for a set number of years. Adding a surviving spouse to the payout lowers the monthly amount but extends the protection.
Fees, riders and surrender periods
Optional riders add cost each year. Surrender periods can tie your money up for years, which matters if you might need a lump sum.
Your health and existing coverage
Health affects the price of any new life insurance. A policy you already own may be worth keeping because replacing it at an older age often costs more.

Questions about retirement income planning

Something not covered here? (925) 574-8642

Do I need to buy an annuity to work with you?

No. Some clients find the right move is keeping what they own and adjusting how they use it. We show you the options, including doing nothing, and you decide.

Could the cash value I have built up in a policy help pay my bills in retirement?

In many cases it can, usually by borrowing against it or taking withdrawals. Either one shrinks what your beneficiary eventually gets, and taking too much can let the policy lapse. We map out how much you can draw before that becomes a risk.

How is this different from what my financial advisor does?

We focus on the insurance and annuity side of your income. If you already work with an advisor, we are happy to fit around their plan rather than replace it.

What happens to my income if I die early?

That depends on the option. Some pay nothing further, some continue to a spouse, and some return unused money to a beneficiary. We explain each choice and what it costs in monthly income.

Do you meet with clients outside Dublin?

Yes. We work with clients in Pleasanton, San Ramon, Livermore and nearby towns, and most of the planning can be done by phone.
